We know what you’re thinking… “door swag is a prize you win at the front door of an event, duh!” While that may be one kind of door swag, here at Mayflowers Floral Studios, we’re big fans of a different type of door swag.
What is a Door Swag
A door swag is a decorative hanging arrangement, like a wreath, that is typically placed over a door or window. Also, like a wreath, it is often made of flowers, greenery, or other natural materials but can also be made of fabric, ribbon, or other materials. However, unlike a wreath that is circular or rectangular, swags are designed vertically.

History of Door Swags
Door swags have been used for centuries to decorate doorways and windows. In fact, the earliest known door swags were made of evergreen branches and flowers and were hung over doorways during the winter months to ward off evil spirits.
In the Middle Ages, door swags became more elaborate and were often made of silk, velvet, or other luxurious fabrics. They were often decorated with beads, jewels, and other embellishments.
During the Victorian era, they were often made of fresh flowers and greenery. They were used to decorate doorways during special occasions, such as weddings and holidays.
Tips for Choosing Door Swags
When choosing a door swag, there are a few things to keep in mind:
- The style of your home décor. The swag should complement the overall style of your home.
- The occasion. If you are buying a swag for a special occasion, such as a wedding or holiday, choose a swag that is appropriate for the event.
- The size of the door or window. Make sure the swag is the right size for the door or window you are decorating.
No matter what type of door swag you choose, it is sure to add a touch of elegance and sophistication to your home décor.
